Karna Vedhana (Ear Piercing Ceremony) or Karnavedha is one of the 16 Hindu Samskaras performed for a child. This ceremony is performed to open the inner ears of the child to receive sacred vibrations. It is observed that performing this ceremony cleanses the sin and nurtures the soul of a child. In our tradition, a pierced ear shows how cultured is the family.
This ceremony is performed for both girls and boys. On the day of Karna Vedhana – the child is given new clothes then an Ayusha Homa is performed. Before conducting the Karna Vedhana and the Kalasa water is sprinkled on the child, the Mantra verses are chanted for the welfare of the child.
When to Perform Karna Vedhana (Ear Piercing Ceremony)?
The Karna Vedhana ceremony is usually done within one year of childbirth or on the 1st Nakshatra birthday as Ayush homa is also performed together.
